Heat pumps, EPCs and landlord planning

A heat pump should be evaluated as a heating design decision. Its performance and assessed rating depend on the whole system and applicable methodology.

When is it worth investigating?

Review heat loss, radiator or underfloor capacity, hot-water storage, outdoor space, electrical supply and tenant needs. Flat and leasehold constraints need early attention.

When might it be the wrong first step?

Do not replace a working heating system simply because a generic calculator awards heat pumps fixed points. Compare designs, running assumptions, installation disruption and maintenance requirements.

How many EPC points could it add?

There is no universal points award. The current property, existing measures, installation specification and assessment methodology all matter. Use the recorded recommendation sequence or an assessor-reviewed scenario; do not add independent estimates together as a guaranteed result.

How much should you allow?

See the published cost benchmarks and request a quotation for the actual scope. The price of a measure is different from the cost of achieving a target rating.

What should happen first?

Start with a proper heat-loss and system design assessment. Compare quotes on an equivalent scope and check current support schemes directly.
